Brand matters even more in the AI age

And OOH remains one of the best ways to build a memorable one

There has been a lot of reflection lately on branding, especially in the context of how rapidly AI is changing marketing.

AI is making it dramatically cheaper and easier to produce marketing content. Companies can now generate more ads, emails, videos, and campaigns than ever before. But while the supply of content is exploding, human attention is not. That imbalance makes standing out harder, not easier.

This is exactly why brand matters now more than ever.

A strong brand acts as a shortcut, almost a cheat code. People are more likely to click on a name they recognize, pay a premium for a company they trust, and recommend products that feel familiar. Research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science has long shown that growth comes from building “mental availability,” meaning a brand is easy to notice and easy to recall at the moment of purchase. AI can generate content in seconds, but it cannot create years of familiarity and trust. It also cannot brute-force trust through volume.

This is also why out of home (OOH) advertising is becoming increasingly important. OOH has always been one of the strongest channels for building brands, but historically it was difficult to buy and manage. We’ve changed all that. Today, campaigns can be planned, launched, and measured with much of the speed and flexibility expected from digital channels.

The results continue to reinforce its value. A recent study from the Out of Home Advertising Association of America (OAAA) and Kochava found that OOH delivered roughly 2× the performance lift of TV, while digital conversion rates increased 5.3× as consumers moved from one to ten OOH exposures. Brand building and measurable performance are increasingly converging rather than sitting in separate categories.

The companies that win in the AI era will not simply rely on producing more content with AI systems operating 24/7. They will build brands that are remembered, trusted, and seen as premium in the minds of consumers.
